Similar style to Cheryl Fernandez-Versini at Belle Dress Hire.

Ok, it’s not EXACTLY the same dress as Cheryl wore on the X Factor stage at the weekend BUT it’s a similar idea in terms of the style:-

This dress divides opinion with those who have tried it on … some love the fact that the dress is different at the bottom and some say “I wish the dress was the same the whole way down!”.  My response to the latter is, “The dress just wouldn’t have the same impact without the sheer bottom and the wow factor would be gone.”

The whole point of a different “skirt” in an evening gown is to turn heads, to draw attention and it’s a great way of standing out in the crowd without jeopardising your modesty.

You should check out a raft of starlets who have worn these “two-piece but one dress” evening styles perfectly …. Vanessa Hudgens, Sienna Miller, Lea Michele, Ciara, Taylor Swift ……The beauty of wearing a dress that has a different fabric on the bottom than on the top is that it adds drama, texture and shape to the dress.  Dare to be different at your next event!

Teen Choice Awards 2014

Not just for the younguns this event, the annual Teen Choice Awards has now become synonymous with goofy fun, a more relaxed laid back red carpet and on-stage jibes by the presenters both young and old.

I was surprised to see a wealth of looks at this year’s event, some of which I thought were spot on and others …. somewhat lacking.

The three most important things to consider when dressing for a special event is your age, the “type” of occasion you’re attending and the fit of your outfit.  If you only bear these three things in mind and nothing else when selecting your choice of attire you simply can’t go wrong.

There has been a real lack of red carpet/black tie events over the summer months so I haven’t been blogging so much as there literally hasn’t been anything to comment on, so let’s make up for lost time shall we?

Black, black and more black!  Black is back.  Even though we’re still in the month of August, Selena Gomez, Cher Lloyd and Kim Kardashian all decided against bright colours.  I simply LOVED Selena Gomez’s simple yet chic trouser suit and silver pointed shoes.  She is showing young ladies that you can cover up and dress elegantly when you’re young and still look stylish!  Her make up with the smoky eye, lack of accessories and slicked back hair were just perfect.

Teenie Bopper, Cher Lloyd also shone in classy black, although she kept things fun and younger with a shorter hemline and a hint of see through mesh.  Mesh fabric is so in style at the moment for evening wear, it’s a way of showing skin without being over revealing or vulgar.  It’s also great at disguising blemished or uneven skin tone as well.

At just 16, it’s hard to process just how mature Bella Thorne seems to be when making fashion choices for events.  This outfit is a little out there but I loved it on her.  The blue is perfect with her auburn colouring and the very structured silhouette and stiff fabric make the most of her small frame.  However, the mesh inset at the bust is in my opinion too low and inappropriate for her age.  Remember number one in my most important things to consider ….?

Keeping things fun was an amazing dress worn by Odeya Rush who stars alongside Taylor Swift in the upcoming flick, The Giver.  The coolest part of the dress were the pockets!  Ingenious. It keeps the style informal and downplays the fuller skirt and more dramatic corseted, lace top which all could look a tad OTT.  The fact that the hemline stops above her ankle again is a fresh take on evening/party wear.

I’m glad to see red carpet events are finally on the increase and look forward to blogging about hopefully some really interesting fashion choices.

Play with Formal Fashion!

Even though I have a beautiful collection of formal and evening dresses at Belle Dress Hire, I have to say I admire anyone who takes a risk with black tie fashion and makes it work!

Turning a “standard” evening dress code on its head is Taylor Swift whilst attending this year’s Country Music Awards ….

I just LOVED her look as evening wear!  LOVED LOVED LOVED it!  She’s a young girl so can have a bit of fun on the red carpet with a cropped top with cut outs showing off her trim waist and then a simple, full black skirt with side split, paired with awesome sandals

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that Taylor is being lazy at this event, she’s actually been extremely clever with her styling and looks effortlessly chic.  This outfit would be so comfortable during an awards ceremony which can go on for hours.  She would be able to walk about the room in this skirt, dance etc  Ok, she may need to pass on the spuds at dinner due to the danger of a bloated mid riff ….. but skipping some carbs would be SO worth it to look like this.

I posted about Emma Watson’s play with formal wear at the Oscar’s which I didn’t care for but Taylor Swift gets it bang on in my opinion with this look.  She can’t do any wrong on the red carpet for me at the moment.

This look can be easily replicated for a fab, dressed up night out on the town.  Simply pair a cropped white top with large pantaloon trousers in a dark coloured – black or navy – floaty fabric.  These are all over the High Street at the moment!  The wider the pantaloon the better to exaggerate the waist and also to look more like a full skirt therefore channelling a more “formal” style.

Glamour at the Grammys ….

….. Well sort of.  Deeply disappointed by the lack of imagination, creative styling and fashion forward designs at the 2014 Grammys.  This event is always know as the “little bit crazy red carpet event.”  In other words, it’s that one big showbiz event when stars can throw caution to the wind and wear something really different and unique.  Remember Fergie in that vivid orange lace dress with black underwear?

Ok, it may not be your cup of tea but she was going against typical fashion rules in showing her undies and the fact that she chose solid black underwear as well made an additional statement.  Fergie took advantage of the fun side of the Grammys with this look

How I wish some of her peers had also had this idea at the weekend

Beyonce, Beyonce, Beyonce.  Now I haven’t seen the footage myself but I hear you put on quite a risqué show??!!  That aside.  What the hell????

The hair is SSSSOOOOOO horrendously bad.  There are no words.  AND also, haven’t we seen this dress on multiple stars, in different colours, in sightly different textures of lace about 5 million times over the past good few years????  Come on, this is the most imaginative you could come up with??  Haven’t we seen this on Jennifer Lopez, Ciara, Rhianna, oh and even yourself only at a different event in black???!!!!!!  Seriously, so disappointe

I can’t believe I am actually typing this, but you have to check out Paris Hilton!!!!!  Now THIS is a “Grammys” dress.  I’m still in shock that she got this so right.  It fits her perfectly and I love how she has styled the whole look from accessories to hair. Have to also give her credit cos the girl knows how to work a dress!

Have to also say I’m a big fan of updos with evening dresses, so I loved Katy Perry’s hair.  If you have an event coming up consider her look because it will look immaculate the entire night as with enough hair spray and pins it won’t move

I’m still making my way through pics from the night and if anything else jumps out at me I’ll be sure to write another blog but I mean, nothing has stood out at all.  Yes, Taylor Swift looked beautiful, but it was safe.  Stunning absolutely yes she was, but boring so will keep looking for superstar fashion today from the Grammys and will keep you all posted!

Finally! Some good uns at the Golden Globes ….

…… Well not exactly mind-blowingly fabulous, but a hell of a lot better than most!!!

Taylor Swift was certainly in favour of the colour trend that seemed to be everywhere at this event but unlike some of her peers, she seems to have been able to wear the dress rather than the other way around.  Perhaps it’s the fact that she’s very tall and slight in figure which means the dress doesn’t swamp her.  Also, the fact that it’s black paired with another colour might also have helped with this style as well rather than two clashing colours or a mixture of hues all at once.

Jessica Chastain shows us how a simple, black, well shaped Givenchy dress can look great on the red carpet.  It’s not a boring choice …. although doesn’t massively excite me either, it fits her body really well and she looks effortlessly chic.

I do like this fishtail gown on Kate Beckinsale, who always chooses the more “glamorous” options for red carpets and you can see why!  The sex siren style just suits her!  She always keeps her hair and make up nice and simple but pairs this with a va va voom dress and Voila!  Not my favourite dress at this event but at least she looks like she made a bloody effort!

I have two blog posts left on the 2014 Golden Globes …. One I will reserve completely for Emma Watson in Christian Dior and the other on the dresses that I really loved at this year’s event and there aren’t too many of them ….

OMG what the hell went on at this year’s VMAs????

Between One Direction getting booed when they collected the Song of the Summer Award, Lady Gaga surprisingly taking the boys side and telling them “they deserve every bit of success that they have” AND the awfully bad, terrible, cheap and tasteless fashion ensembles I have ever seen in one place …..  Honestly, what the hell were the starlets thinking at the VMAs??

I don’t even know where to start there are so many bad examples to show you!

Let’s begin with the “Teen Queens” Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus first shall we. Selena’s Atelier Versace, navy blue dress …. I’m sorry but this was just really disappointing! It’s as if she decided to vamp up her look and try something abit more risque and sexy however, this dress just looks wrong!  The folded down piece of fabric at the bust to expose a lacy bodice underneath just looks cheap to me.  Also, the way that the dress is stitched to look like pins are holding the seams together – well that’s new!  We haven’t seen that before in 1994 by Liz Hurley!!!  Come on Selena!!!  At least Liz had the boobs and sex appeal to pull this look off almost 20 years ago!!!And then we have Miley Cyrus in a yellow, rubber two piece …..

Now I know it was a costume for on stage .. but talk about about tasteless!  I’ve been digging her punk look recently alot and I really loved the Dolce and Gabbana outfit which she arrived in at the VMAs and so wish she’d kept it on.  The cute, cropped top with cut off trousers and coloured embellishments is really fresh and young and PERFECT for the VMAs.  It just suits the occasion and her beautifully as this is not the type of event for a full length, formal gown.  Which brings me nicely onto my next victim, Rita Ora.

A 20ft train, seriously?  An assistant to carry the train, are you kidding me?  This choice of dress was completely wrong  for the VMAs.  She simply looked ridiculous.  Rita didn’t look chic, she didn’t look elegant, nor fashion forward or stylish.  Literally, she didn’t tick any boxes for me in this Alexandre Vauthier gown which had it been worn to the correct event with properly groomed hair and accessories would have looked fab on the red carpet.   Epic Fail I’m afraid.

I’m sure you’re wondering if there was anything that I liked at the VMAs this year after all this ranting!

Let’s turn our attention to potty mouthed Taylor Swift, who was brilliantly captured on camera dropping the F bomb as clear as day when Harry Styles was on stage, priceless!  She may have a dirty mouth, but when it comes to fashion, she got it right in a gorgeous Herve Leger, midnight blue dress.  Even though, this was full length to the floor, the fact that it was skin tight and so eye-wateringly low at the bust, made the style more current and added a fabulous sexiness to the look.  I loved her hair and her make up as well.  Just a word to the wise Taylor …. you should know better than anyone that the camera never lies so try being more discrete next time you want to slag off an ex!!!

Who said black had to be boring!!!

When Ruth came for an appointment at Belle Dress Hire, she was specifically looking for something simple yet elegant which would be comfortable to wear all evening at a black tie event.

Ruth decided to go for a gorgeous black dress with beaded necklace collar.  The beauty of this dress is that it requires no necklace but just ear rings to set the look off.  Also, a plain black bag and shoes complete the styling.

Higher neckline dresses have been favoured recently on the red carpet by celebrities, check out Isla Fisher and Taylor Swift  ….

Sequin dresses RULE!

It’s official, even though we aren’t approaching the Xmas party season as yet, it seems that sequin “bling bling” dresses are all the rage on the red carpet at the moment!

Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Kelly Rowland all stepped out in wear sequin gowns to the recent Billboard Awards event.  They have mixed the textures of sequin and sheer very well and each gone for a completely different shape/style and colour but essentially all three are sequin dresses.

There are a few gorgeous sequin gowns available at Belle Dress Hire that you can snap up for just £70 hire fee ……

I have to admit, Taylor Swift looks beautiful …

It has to be said, from a personal point of view, I am not Taylor Swift’s number one fan.  I haven’t been overly impressed with her fashion sense over the years either but I had to take a note when I saw photos of her at a recent Country Music Awards event in a stunning, full length, gold beaded gown.  There is a real fine line which can be crossed whenever younger girls wear evening dresses in that they can really age the wearer, especially beaded dresses similar to what Taylor is wearing.  However, Taylor’s stylist has been very clever, keeping accessories very simple and by pulling her hair into a chic ponytail, this keeps the look young and fresh.  This is probably one of my most favourite looks on Taylor to date this year
