Night out Essentials!

Every woman should have these next few items in their drawer at home because you will use them countless times and may even be able to come to the rescue of a friend in need, if a fashion disaster strikes on a night out.

First item is Body Tape. Honestly, this product is super handy for so many things! Have a strapless top that gapes a little at the sides? ….. a strip of double sided body tape will hold it in place all night. Another fantastic use is for shirts or blouses that gape at the buttons. Being bigger busted, I always find that I can see through to my bra in between my shirt buttons despite it fitting perfectly everywhere else! Put a small piece of body tape on the two layers of fabric, stick together and voila no more gaps!! I’ve tried this over and over again and the tape always sticks even though it’s technically against two layers of cloth and not skin, it still works a treat. Also, for a temporary fix on a hemline that unravels, the tape again will hold fast at least for the duration of a night out. The body tape is especially good for backless tops and dresses, it just keeps things in place particularly because your back is always moving and backless tops do have a tendency to fall off if not secured in place and the tape will do that. I have purchased body tape off the Internet before but found the stickiness just not good enough, to be honest I would personally recommend the Eylure Body Tape – Pre Cut Adhesive Strips. These can be bought in various shops including Boots and Superdrug. Priced generally under £5 this is worth the small investment as you never know when you or a friend will need this!

Another brilliant product to have in your arsenal is a pair of silicone petals, aka nipple covers! Not only do these come in really handy for evening dresses and slinky tops for going out, they are especially fantastic for going on holiday! Sometimes when it’s especially warm abroad or if you’ve gotten too much sun, the thought of having to wear a bra under a strappy vest top seems awful. These petals will ensure your modesty is intact and that you will feel completely comfortable going without a bra, even under the skimpiest of tops! I bought these petals in Primark for just £2 and I have used them at least twenty five times. The glue/sticky side is still going strong so certainly well worth the money and let’s be honest even if they don’t last much longer, it won’t break the bank to replace them. I simply wear the petals and then when I’m done using them, I put the plastic cover back over the sticky side and put them both into the original packaging. This has worked perfectly well for me. I would assume there are a wealth of similar products available online and in high street stores, I can only personally recommend the Primark ones at the moment.

Lastly, if you stay in a hotel and they provide a sewing kit as part of the bathroom accessories ALWAYS take them home! Simply gather them up and put one into the zipper part of every handbag you own as well as any suitcases, hand luggage etc This means that no matter where you are, there is a safety pin, a button and a needle and thread to hand!

Next time a zipper goes, or the seams start unravelling or your top threatens to expose you to the world, dot panic, just smile and simply reach into your handbag for those all important night out essentials!!

Winning Dress Once Again For Belle Dress Hire!

A lovely lady contacted Belle Dress Hire last week to arrange an appointment for her daughter.  When I asked if she needed directions, I was somewhat surprised when she said, “Yes, definitely need directions, don’t know Lisburn too well as we’re from Co. Monaghan.”  I have had ladies visit from as far as Coleraine, Kilkeel, Newry ….. but a 2 hour drive from across the border showed immense dedication in the quest for an evening dress!

During the appointment, I soon realised the reason why there was such a need to travel for a full length formal gown.  The lovely Orla was to complete in the Glaslough Rose competition which is part of the annual Glaslough Fete in Co. Monaghan.

As this was Orla’s first time taking part in such an event, finding the perfect dress was extremely important.  There were four KEY things to bear in mind to ensure it was the right style  …

Number one and the most important – the FIT of the dress which I always tell my customers is the most critical thing to consider when choosing an evening dress.

Number two was MODESTY as she’s a beautiful yet young girl, I needed both herself and mum to be comfortable with the level of flesh on show.

Number three was UNIQUENESS of the dress as it was imperative that Orla stood out on stage from other competitors.

And finally number four was COMFORTABILITY so that ease of movement would not be a challenge.

After numerous dress changes, we all agreed on the very first dress that Orla tried on!  I can’t tell you how many times that happens.  This stunning dress from Paris, fitted Orla to absolute perfection.  It met her curves without clinging and the sheer tulle bottom kept the style young and modern.  The shorter hemline was just that, short yet modest and the embellished beadwork ensured that the dress would sparkle under stage lights.

I was not surprised one bit when Orla’s mum told me that she won BEST DRESSED ROSE category at the competition and they were coming back this week to choose her formal dress!

Congratulations Orla and family who I’m sure are very proud of you.

Rose 2014 001

Best Dressed Rose, Glaslough Rose 2014.

It’s all about Cat Deeley ….

Cat was a guest on the panel of this week’s Fashion Police.  Have to say, the girl suits living in the US!  She looks so fresh and for being a blonde, her hair is so glossy and shiny.  Would love to know what she uses!!

But it’s not just the hair, her skin is glowing and she has such a natural laid back approach when it comes to fashion.  I believe she fully supports the high street and likes mixing designer pieces with simple t-shirts and trousers which can picked up at H&M, Topshop and Zara.

‘My first thing I do is go and hoover around Topshop’ explains Cat, I really miss it, I’m a total high street girl. I like to mix it all up, bit of designer and high street, French Connection and Monsoon, and no one does high street as good as here.’

She also doesn’t hire a stylist!  Now that really is going against the grain in America.  All celebrities these days (apart from Britney that is) have stylists on board with them so it’s refreshing that Cat is confident in her own ability to know what suits her shape and what works best on her figure.

Cat has definitely become leaner since moving to the US.  She never had a particularly curvaceous shape to be fair but her limbs and torso look so lithe at the moment.  Maybe her engagement and pending wedding to Paddy Kielty has something to do with it …..

What do Joan Rivers, Olivia Palermo and Rachel Zoe all have in common?

……………… their love of costume jewellery!!  Joan has her own collection and thriving business which she showcases on Fashion Police every week. If you can think back to The Hills series, you’ll remember that Olivia got the job with Elle magazine within the Accessories Department! Rachel is on a whole different level with a collection of jewellery which boasts vintage chanel.

I don’t for one minute think we can all rush out and start building up a collection of Chanel or Dior pieces from the 30s BUT going to antique fairs and also auctions may be a good starting off point to pick up some one off pieces.

Remember you are looking for statement pieces of jewellery.  Think ornate, coloured stones ….. and most importantly you must love the piece itself.  This is the biggest part of building up a collection as there will come a time when you have to pass onto a friend or family member and wouldn’t it be lovely if you had a story to tell about each piece?  The beauty of strong, statement pieces of jewellery means that you can bring the simpliest of white t-shirt or black cardi to life!  If your jewellery “looks” expensive then you will look expensive.

A good tip to also bear in mind is never to buy a piece of jewellery to go with a particular outfit.  The jewellery must be the statement, therefore, you pick this first and then build the outfit around it.  This means that you won’t associate the piece of jewellery with just one outfit and will get more wear out of it.

Also raid your mother and grandmother’s closets.  They are bound to be coming down with costume jewellery which they probably forgot about and haven’t worn in years.

Happy costume jewellery shopping!!!

Top Tips for Beach Fashion

No point in writing paragraphs here, there really are just a few simple guidelines to follow ………

A smaller bikini = A smaller body, but remember not to go too small!  No bulges please.

The Monokini = perfect means of disguising a tummy bulge, stretch marks or scars.  But beware of uneven tan lines with this one.

Go for Black = this is thee most slimming colour and you can easily brighten things up by adding coloured accessories.

Accessories = multiple neck beads, large statement ear-rings or a hat are best but just pick one!  Don’t forget about your feet either ….. I recommend wedge sandals for added height and they will lengthen your leg.

Sunglasses = always a must!

High Factor = simply because sunburn is never attractive.

Waterproof mascara = highly recommended

Dye eyelashes and eyebrows before holiday = a must have if you are blonde or fair haired.

Just follow these few basic rules and you’re good to go!
