Teen Choice Awards 2014

Not just for the younguns this event, the annual Teen Choice Awards has now become synonymous with goofy fun, a more relaxed laid back red carpet and on-stage jibes by the presenters both young and old.

I was surprised to see a wealth of looks at this year’s event, some of which I thought were spot on and others …. somewhat lacking.

The three most important things to consider when dressing for a special event is your age, the “type” of occasion you’re attending and the fit of your outfit.  If you only bear these three things in mind and nothing else when selecting your choice of attire you simply can’t go wrong.

There has been a real lack of red carpet/black tie events over the summer months so I haven’t been blogging so much as there literally hasn’t been anything to comment on, so let’s make up for lost time shall we?

Black, black and more black!  Black is back.  Even though we’re still in the month of August, Selena Gomez, Cher Lloyd and Kim Kardashian all decided against bright colours.  I simply LOVED Selena Gomez’s simple yet chic trouser suit and silver pointed shoes.  She is showing young ladies that you can cover up and dress elegantly when you’re young and still look stylish!  Her make up with the smoky eye, lack of accessories and slicked back hair were just perfect.

Teenie Bopper, Cher Lloyd also shone in classy black, although she kept things fun and younger with a shorter hemline and a hint of see through mesh.  Mesh fabric is so in style at the moment for evening wear, it’s a way of showing skin without being over revealing or vulgar.  It’s also great at disguising blemished or uneven skin tone as well.

At just 16, it’s hard to process just how mature Bella Thorne seems to be when making fashion choices for events.  This outfit is a little out there but I loved it on her.  The blue is perfect with her auburn colouring and the very structured silhouette and stiff fabric make the most of her small frame.  However, the mesh inset at the bust is in my opinion too low and inappropriate for her age.  Remember number one in my most important things to consider ….?

Keeping things fun was an amazing dress worn by Odeya Rush who stars alongside Taylor Swift in the upcoming flick, The Giver.  The coolest part of the dress were the pockets!  Ingenious. It keeps the style informal and downplays the fuller skirt and more dramatic corseted, lace top which all could look a tad OTT.  The fact that the hemline stops above her ankle again is a fresh take on evening/party wear.

I’m glad to see red carpet events are finally on the increase and look forward to blogging about hopefully some really interesting fashion choices.

Winning Dress Once Again For Belle Dress Hire!

A lovely lady contacted Belle Dress Hire last week to arrange an appointment for her daughter.  When I asked if she needed directions, I was somewhat surprised when she said, “Yes, definitely need directions, don’t know Lisburn too well as we’re from Co. Monaghan.”  I have had ladies visit from as far as Coleraine, Kilkeel, Newry ….. but a 2 hour drive from across the border showed immense dedication in the quest for an evening dress!

During the appointment, I soon realised the reason why there was such a need to travel for a full length formal gown.  The lovely Orla was to complete in the Glaslough Rose competition which is part of the annual Glaslough Fete in Co. Monaghan.

As this was Orla’s first time taking part in such an event, finding the perfect dress was extremely important.  There were four KEY things to bear in mind to ensure it was the right style  …

Number one and the most important – the FIT of the dress which I always tell my customers is the most critical thing to consider when choosing an evening dress.

Number two was MODESTY as she’s a beautiful yet young girl, I needed both herself and mum to be comfortable with the level of flesh on show.

Number three was UNIQUENESS of the dress as it was imperative that Orla stood out on stage from other competitors.

And finally number four was COMFORTABILITY so that ease of movement would not be a challenge.

After numerous dress changes, we all agreed on the very first dress that Orla tried on!  I can’t tell you how many times that happens.  This stunning dress from Paris, fitted Orla to absolute perfection.  It met her curves without clinging and the sheer tulle bottom kept the style young and modern.  The shorter hemline was just that, short yet modest and the embellished beadwork ensured that the dress would sparkle under stage lights.

I was not surprised one bit when Orla’s mum told me that she won BEST DRESSED ROSE category at the competition and they were coming back this week to choose her formal dress!

Congratulations Orla and family who I’m sure are very proud of you.

A/W 2014 Formal Season …

All you lovely, young ladies out there who are attending a school formal in September/October, I just wanted to let you know that girls from Lurgan, Portadown, Kilkeel, Belfast and Lisburn have already started coming to appointments at Belle Dress Hire and are reserving dresses for hire.

As Belle Dress Hire specialises in exclusive, high end styles, once a number of dresses have been reserved for a particular school formal then unfortunately I will not be able to take any further appointments so as to avoid only being able to offer a small selection of gowns to someone at an appointment.

Just a heads up that if you are interested in hiring a dress for your school formal, it’s never too early to select a dress and pay your deposit as it can sometimes take weeks to find matching shoes and accessorises.  Plus you want plenty of time to research and experiment with complimenting hair styles and make up.

Belle Dresses range from sizes 6 through to 18 and for a quick response use the contact us form on the website to make an appointment.

Congratulations to 15 year old Sorcha Ferguson who competed in this year’s Ultimate Beauty UK & Ireland competition at the weekend.  The annual event took place at Bellini’s in Newry and showcased the very best of young beauty both inside and out.

When Sorcha came to me for a competition evening dress we had to bear in mind her natural beauty and certainly her young age.  Sorcha is a tiny size 6 so again we didn’t want anything too revealing but wanted to take full advantage of her very slim figure.

Although loads of dresses suited Sorcha, we finally decided on this gorgeous, full length, raspberry coloured halter neck gown.  With a few alterations, the dress fitted perfectly.  I love this colour on brunettes and I believe she received lots of compliments on the day.

Sorcha was among the top 15 girls and for her very first beauty competition I think she did amazingly well!

Wedding Belles ….

Are you attending a wedding this Summer?  Then listen up!  Everyone knows being a wedding guest days costs a small fortune.  There’s the hen party in Marbs, the overnight accommodation in the wedding hotel, money for drinks throughout the day, the “cash donation” seeing as nobody seems to want actual presents anymore …. The list is endless and pricey!

Last thing you want to have to do is splash out on a glitzy outfit which you’ll probably never wear again as the wedding pics will be all over social media! Let Belle Dress Hire take all the stress away from your shoulders.

I have some beautiful full length dresses that would be stunning to wear as a wedding guest.  Although my styles are predominantly formal/evening gowns many are of a floatier fabric with beaded detail rather then sequin/diamante making them perfect choices for a special occasion such as a wedding.  Most dresses also come with a matching wrap which keeps you modest for the ceremony and also more importantly saves a few pennies on having to buy a jacket or shrug.

Dresses start from just £50 to hire with a small selection of shorter length styles right through to full length, elaborate gowns.  Be sure to visit the website belledresshire.co.uk to make an appointment.

Dress like the Queen of Topshop …

Chloe Green attended the annual Cash & Rocket gala dinner in London at the weekend in a white and silver beaded dress.

I have to say, she does look really pretty in the photos but the dress doesn’t fit very well at all.  It also was badly wrinkled in some of the press photos I saw.  I hate the added bangles on each arm which I think cheapens this whole look.

Belle Dress Hire has an extremely similar dress in stock to Chloe’s but in an orange jersey with gold beading which actually looks much richer and is a fantastic colour combo for the Summer ….

Megan

Unlike Chloe’s dress, this style is a heavy jersey fabric and fully lined so it won’t wrinkle.  The colour is bang on trend and also suits blondes, red heads and brunettes!  For just £70 hire fee you could wear this stunning gown at your next event.

Bag Yourself the same dress as Blake Lively at Belle Dress Hire!

Do you think Blake Lively’s fashion sense is amazing?  Would you love to mimic her style at your next big event?  Look no further than Belle Dress Hire in Lisburn ….

This dress is available to hire in a stunning raspberry shade which is so striking especially in the Summer.

Now one of the main reasons Blake makes this dress look even more special is the addition of coloured ear rings in a rich turquoise.  Because it’s coming into the warmth of Summer you can afford to think outside of the box in terms of accessories at Black Tie events.  Take a leaf out of Blake’s book and snub the traditional diamante bling ear-rings, bracelets etc at your next event.  It could just make the difference and turn a simple, elegant gown into a fashion forward, eye catching statement.

Girl Crush Alert on Blake Lively!

I can’t help myself, I am so in love with this girl’s fashion choices!!!  She can do no wrong in my eyes.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival …

Her choice of sequin Chanel is simply stunning.  It’s young and fresh whilst at the same time ferociously elegant and chic.  Her glossy hair looks flawless as does her make up and choice of an estimated one million dollars worth of jewellery!  Just two tiny issues I have with this gorgeous dress …. I loathe the pockets and think they totally ruin the line and look plus the dress is just a tad too short for my liking!

A similar sequin, silver toned dress is available for hire at Belle Dress Hire.  Channel Blake’s look in this beautiful, sheath beaded gown.  It is a very small size 6 dress …

I also love the shorter length dress again worn by Blake this week at Cannes Film Festival … I adored the beadwork and rich effect of the brocade style fabric.  I’d love to know what they put on her legs as she looks as if she’s wearing tights they are so flawless!  Reminds me to buy some Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs as it gives the same effect but be very wary as it rubs off onto clothes!

But the pièce de la résistance HAS to be THEE Gucci Premiere gown …

OMG.  Just perfection.  The simplicity of the shape, the richness of burgundy on her skin and the fabulous neckline are amazing on Blake.

Not only is the dress fantastic, check out her ear rings!!!!!!!!!!!!  Exquisite.  AND I LOVE LOVE LOVE her plait.  Ladies take note, as this is a hair style you can do yourself at home with perhaps the add of a friend so they can check the back.  It’s an undo that is dressy yet casual and effortless at the same time so a perfect choice for a school formal.

Body Image …. My Thoughts

La Perla has removed an extremely skinny looking mannequin from their Soho store in NYC and have said they will not use this particular “dummy” moving forward.

This was in response to a complaint via Twitter when a passerby took a quick pic of the offending mannequin and posted the photo along with the caption “How does La Perla think ribs on a mannequin is ok?!”

I wanted to comment on this headline because I see women and young girls at their most vulnerable during appointments at Belle Dress Hire.  I am still surprised to hear ladies who look absolutely fabulous in my eyes, complain about that little bit of skin fat that hangs between the armpit and shoulder or the non existent bingo wings, back fat, “food baby” etc etc  There has never been a customer that has come to me without complaining about at least one part of their body.

Problem is whenever women come to me to try on dresses, they come out of the changing area and face a mirror which is over 8 feet high and at least 4 foot wide.  There is no escaping the image staring straight back at my customers.  It’s their full body on display.  No photoshop, soft lighting or camera angle trickery unfortunately can be used.  For the majority, they can only see in the mirror all the parts of their body that they hate.  Rather than looking at themselves as a package of sorts which has positives and negatives, more and more of my customers express to me their feelings of hatred towards their bodies.

I have been increasingly aware of this amongst my younger customers who are attending school formals.  I discussed this recently with a Secondary school teacher who admitted to me that she is actually horrified by the feelings towards body image of her 16-17 year old pupils.  Apparently, “skinniness” and weight issues are discussed with furore and would be one of the most prevalent topics of conversation throughout the day.

It’s not only the under 20s who don’t give themselves any credit when it comes to their shape but I’ve noticed it more and more amongst my 30-40 year old clients as well.  What makes this even more sad is the fact that a lot of these ladies have embarked on dieting/fitness journeys which have seen them lose stones in weight.  Rather than focus on their remarkable achievements they continue to criticise the image in the mirror, highlighting all the flaws they consider to still be there.

I am the worst culprit of this so I’m not sitting on my high horse telling everyone to  be more like me, quite the opposite in fact.  I just think that next time I look in the mirror, rather than tut at my thighs (which is always the first place that I look) I’m going to try and smile with thoughts of how that new conditioner I bought makes my hair look really shiny.  I’m not expecting miracles to happen as I know another negative body thought will creep in instantaneously but when it does I’m going to think about another positive …. I’ve always liked my skinny feet for example.  Listen, I’m ready to give it a go.  Main aim is quite simple NOT TO BE SO HARD ON MYSELF.

Evening Gown Envy!

Every now and again I get seriously green eyed when I see red carpet dresses that I think are amazing!

Unfortunately, without a mega budget, these styles will only be seen in my dreams, but hey I still love to imagine what I would look like wearing them!  After seeing this year’s Met Ball photos, I fell hard for some of the looks and I mean HARD!

…. Emma Stone and Blake Lively pulled out all the stops to impress hostess Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, in gowns by Thakoon and Gucci Premi

And you have to admire the simply stunningly bold Oscar De La Renta dress worn by SJP.  Love or hate it you have to admit it makes a statement and gloriously celebrates fashion which is what the Met Ball is all about!

BIG time, serious dress envy when I saw Rosie Huntington Whiteley wear a jaw droppingly daring Balmain sort dress!  I WANT it

Aaahhhhh, I would die happy if I had Victoria Beckham’s dress hanging in my wardrobe.  You NEVER disappoint VB and I love the fact this is from her own collection with trademark full zip running the length of the dress at the back ..

And I have to admit I actually really like Chrissy Teigen’s dress by Ralph Lauren as well.  It wasn’t my absolute favourite of the night BUT I loved the collar detail.  I thought it was stunningly elegant and the silver grey colour did stand out from the crowd too

Back to daydreaming about these gorgeous gowns and the gorgeous women who wore them. Bloody lucky ducks!!!
