Separates are SEXY!!

I just LOVE separates as evening wear.  Give me a well tailored black tux or a cropped top and pants or skirt over a full length ball gown any day of the week.  IF it’s done right of course.  From Leslie Mann and Emma Watson to Cara Delevingne and Angelina Jolie, many starlets have shunned the typical evening dress expected at red carpet events and created unforgettable fashion moments.

I applaud this completely different take on what is considered as “typical” evening wear.  I think it’s young, I think it’s fashionable, I think it’s fun and should be done so much more!

The separate concept was shown as recently as this week at the Love, Rosie Premiere in London’s Odeon West End by Kimberley Garner (former cast member of Made In Chelsea) and actress, Laura Haddock.

Even though I love this trend, I actually don’t have a wealth of separates available at Belle Dress Hire simply because the suppliers don’t offer enough of this type of thing for me to buy in!  I do however, have this absolutely gorgeous layered, black, tulle skirt with satin bow detail and a separate fitted corset with cream lace.  This skirt also looks amazing with a fitted, brightly coloured cashmere cardigan or could be paired with a simple t-shirt if you really wanted to shake things up.

Black is Best at the Baftas …

I know the Brits were much more recent, but I just refuse to post about this event as I find it total cringe TV.  All I will say is that I loved Rita Ora’s canary yellow dress and leave it at that.

Anyway, onto bigger and better things, such as …… the Baftas!  I know I have commented a number of times in January that classic black seemed a very popular choice for celebs and I have to say the trend is continuing if we look at Uma Thurman, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren and Amy Adams ..

I think these ladies look absolutely stunning!  I LOVE all of their looks.  I’m sorry but there is no getting away from the fact that BLACK IS THEE MOST FLATTERING COLOUR ON THE FIGURE.  Yes it can be harsh on the skin which is why I also recommend navy to my customers at Belle Dress Hire, but if the fit is perfect, black will make you look slimmer than any other colour.  Besides it looks AMAZING with a strong red lip so that can be your colour comfort.

However, those on the red carpet of the Baftas that decided to go with a colour, really did make an impact!  Some in a good way, others were I’m sorry to say, a total disaster!

Looking at the positive …… Lupita Nyong’o continues to make fashion statements in a stunning shade of emerald green which complimented her skin tone to absolute perfection.

And I just have to put a mention in for Oprah Winfrey who looked fabulous in a rich plum coloured dress which really suited her shape.  She is dressing SO well at the moment, go Oprah!

Then the negative, or should I say TRAGIC!  Fearne Cotton, Lily Allen and Claudia Winkleman WTF were you thinking???????????????  This goes beyond making bad fashion choices, their looks can only be branded as ridiculous.

By the way, just a word of advice for you Claudia, if you make a total arse of yourself in front of the world’s media on the red carpet with streaky black liner, TRY TO LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.  We kind of felt sorry for you the first time, but now, I’m sorry I’m just going to be harsh, we pity you.

Animal print HUGE for Autumn/Winter ….

I’m sorry, I have to be totally honest, I just LOVE animal print!  I only have a few leopard print pieces in my wardrobe which include a rain mac, cardi, Kurt Geiger ankle boots and a knee length skirt but I have have worn all of them to death.

Animal print seems to be a fashion trend that keeps coming back to the catwalks every year!  I remember getting first hooked on this look when I saw Angelina Jolie in the amazing coat back in 2004 at the Premiere of the film, Shark Tale ……

When I think about animal print, I think of a statement piece rather than an all over look.  So I’ll pair my print cardi with simple, black pencil trousers.  My rain mac (which is practically identical to Angie’s coat as seen above) with boot-cut jeans.  The KG print ankle boots look gorgeous when I wear them with a knee length, black skirt with layered tulle underneath. So basically, take one piece of animal print clothing and pair this with very simple, plain, block coloured items and you’ll have an outfit that gets you noticed.

Animal print has been synonymous in the past with looking “cheap” aka Bet Lynch from Coronation Street.  It’s easy to avoid this!  Don’t wear any jewelry or heavy makeup and keep hair glossy and fuss free.

If you really want to make an impact at an upcoming event, just look at this amazing animal print dress from Paris, available at Belle Dress Hire in a size 6..  Photo shows a Belle customer who hired the dress and won the evening wear round at the NIFMA competition which was held at the La Mon Hotel Belfast ……

Best Red Carpet Dresses of all time ….

I decided to go back in time for this blog post as there has been so many iconic dresses which appeared on the red carpet over the years.  Remember “that” Halle Berry Oscar dress for example ….

Who could forget the unforgettable Nicole Kidman “yucky yellow” dress which shouldn’t have worked (especially as it’s satin which I personally hate!) but it so did!  Or the backless Hiliary Swank navy blue dream dress as well the funky pairing of purple with turquoise jewelry in which Cameron Diaz dazzled.

And there’s always the personal favourites ….  I just loved Angelina Jolie’s cream with red one shoulder number and her amazing emerald green sequin dresses which she wore at separate Golden Globe Award ceremonies.  Sheer elegance!

You may also have forgotten the beautiful grecian style dress which Jennifer Lopez wore a few years ago to the Oscars, just beautiful …

There has been gorgeous dresses on the red carpet this year but I thought we should reflect and pay tribute to styles from a few years back so we could bask in their glory!!

The Oscars

The Golden Man Awards are over for yet another year and weren’t they simply fabulous!!  I loved the variety of looks this year with some of the younger actresses such as Jessica Chastain and Michelle Williams rocking some unusual and contemporary shapes and fabrics.  However, I was disappointed to see that it wasn’t Angelina Jolie’s thigh high split in her black velvet Versace dress or Posh’s rather sour face whilst wearing the most beautifully tailored dress from her latest collection that made the headlines. Instead, it was Sacha Baron Cohen that grabbed the front pages with his ridiculous ash tossing stunt and antics on the red carpet for which he was removed by security. I used to think high profile events such as the Oscars were untouchable and such blatant behaviour to grab the spotlight to promote a film in advance of its release would simply be ignored or not tolerated. However, Sacha’s stunt proved even the most prestigious red carpet, Hollywood bash is suspectible. Sad to say that this year’s Oscars and the main reason why people watch this event … for the glamour and fashion …. was overshadowed.
