Similar style to Cheryl Fernandez-Versini at Belle Dress Hire.

Ok, it’s not EXACTLY the same dress as Cheryl wore on the X Factor stage at the weekend BUT it’s a similar idea in terms of the style:-

This dress divides opinion with those who have tried it on … some love the fact that the dress is different at the bottom and some say “I wish the dress was the same the whole way down!”.  My response to the latter is, “The dress just wouldn’t have the same impact without the sheer bottom and the wow factor would be gone.”

The whole point of a different “skirt” in an evening gown is to turn heads, to draw attention and it’s a great way of standing out in the crowd without jeopardising your modesty.

You should check out a raft of starlets who have worn these “two-piece but one dress” evening styles perfectly …. Vanessa Hudgens, Sienna Miller, Lea Michele, Ciara, Taylor Swift ……The beauty of wearing a dress that has a different fabric on the bottom than on the top is that it adds drama, texture and shape to the dress.  Dare to be different at your next event!

Glamorous Evening Hair Can Be Done at Home!

Whether you are going straight to an event after work and have little time to get changed and ready or want a glamorous evening style without paying a fortune at the salon, look no further than the shiny, side sweep, one shoulder “do”.

From Eva Mendes, Blake Lively and Jessica Alba to Rita Ora, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Beckinsale and Jamie King, it seems everyone is a fan of this hairstyle regardless of hair colour.  However, two things these ladies all have in common is naturally straight/slightly wavy hair and most importantly ……. SHINE.  You need to have both of these in place before attempting this style as well as pair of tongs and some hairspray.

Ok, before I hear you groan that you weren’t blessed with silky, shiny hair, get yourself to the nearest Boots or Superdrug and buy a shine spray or oil.  There are so many variations of products for shine these days, most of which are inexpensive.

A cheap way to create shine without adding product, is to rinse hair in cold water after shampooing and adding conditioner.  Another great way to make your hair as silky as possible to blow dry the hair downwards which keeps the shaft of the hair flat.

This style will take very little time as I said but will depend on the thickness of your hair.  A good way to save time is to tong individual lengths of hair (approx 2/3inches thick) up to the ear and let them sit in ringlets while you apply make up and get dressed.  This allows the ringlets to “drop” very slightly.  Once everything else is in place, run your fingers through the ringlets to form loose curls.  If they are still too tight a curl, lightly brush the curls through with a boar/nylon bristle brush or a simple paddle brush (do not use a comb as this will frizz the hair). Pull and smooth the hair round so it rests on one shoulder and lightly hair spray into place.  Do NOT overload with hairspray, this style is supposed to look soft and have a slight bounce to it.

This is how I did it (blonde on the left)!  Such an easy hairstyle to do and it keeps an evening look fresh and young!

This particular style really suits a statement ear ring and of course a Belle Dress Hire gown will totally complete the look!

Sorry for being quiet ….

… as I may have been silent on the blog side of things but have been a busy bee with customers at Belle the last few weeks.

Also, I’m just being honest here, but I have not been inspired by any celebrity fashion choices out there either.  Kim K just keeps spilling out of outfits and even the Hollywood red carpet has been really lack lustre.  What is going on??  Plus I’m really missing my Fashion Police updates (RIP Joan).

Even Cheryl and Mel have been very disappointing on X Factor.  Nothing has stood out to me or blown me away at all.  They’ve looked “well” and “nice” but not amazing.  Come On Ladies, get it together!  You both have TEAMS of people getting you ready each week, at least make it look like you made a proper effort!

On a happier note, I have some stunning new dresses available for hire at Belle Dress Hire, just take a sneak peek at these beauties ….

Above is a gorgeous black, vintage style dress with mesh and lace detailing.  Simple but classic and elegant.  Perfect if paired with pillarbox red or Berry nails and lipstick.

Next we have a beautiful, rich, navy blue dress with a complete see through mesh back with jewelled beading.   This is a heavy jersey fabric so won’t wrinkle and hangs extremely well.

Just a few sample pics of new styles available but there are plenty more so book early to avoid disappointment if you have an important event coming up.

Backless Inspiration from Tulisa and Cheryl

Both Cheryl and Tulisa (their surnames are too complicated) channeled backless dresses at this year’s Pride of Britain Awards.

Cheryl’s choice had more of a Victorian edge to it due to the lace fabric and colour, whereas Tulisa’s unusual heavier, embellished dress by Amber Feroz seemed to swallow her up from the front.

To be honest, the magic of both of these dresses was all in the back.  Although, totally ruined in my opinion by those hideous tattoos!  If you are going to wear a backless number soon just make sure you attend to the skin in the run up to your event.  A spotty, dry back isn’t pretty.

The above black, backless, vintage style gown with sheer mesh detail is NEW to Belle Dress Hire and available in a size 8 and I believe has a similar quality to it as those displayed on the red carpet by Tulisa and Cheryl.  A simple design at the front and maximum effect at the back of the dress means you will impress from all angles.  Helga McKay models this new style beautifully at an event in Belfast last weekend and has made perfect choices in relation to her hairstyle and make up.  Effortlessly elegant.

Separates are SEXY!!

I just LOVE separates as evening wear.  Give me a well tailored black tux or a cropped top and pants or skirt over a full length ball gown any day of the week.  IF it’s done right of course.  From Leslie Mann and Emma Watson to Cara Delevingne and Angelina Jolie, many starlets have shunned the typical evening dress expected at red carpet events and created unforgettable fashion moments.

I applaud this completely different take on what is considered as “typical” evening wear.  I think it’s young, I think it’s fashionable, I think it’s fun and should be done so much more!

The separate concept was shown as recently as this week at the Love, Rosie Premiere in London’s Odeon West End by Kimberley Garner (former cast member of Made In Chelsea) and actress, Laura Haddock.

Even though I love this trend, I actually don’t have a wealth of separates available at Belle Dress Hire simply because the suppliers don’t offer enough of this type of thing for me to buy in!  I do however, have this absolutely gorgeous layered, black, tulle skirt with satin bow detail and a separate fitted corset with cream lace.  This skirt also looks amazing with a fitted, brightly coloured cashmere cardigan or could be paired with a simple t-shirt if you really wanted to shake things up.

Be adventurous with evening wear, step outside the box and out of your comfort zone at your next event.  The separate outfit above is available at Belle Dress Hire for just £80 plus security deposit.

It’s simply black and white!

I have had this beautiful black and white dress at Belle for awhile now.  People have been put off by it’s brazen and bold simplicity, besides they have been much more impressed with the nearby twinkle of crystals and sequin.

So I was delighted when the young Milly dared to try on this gorgeous monochrome style for her school formal.  This dress must be worn on somebody tall so that the lighter side panels hit the waist and hips at just the right point.  Milly had a beautiful, elongated torso therefore the dress looked stunning on her.  I was delighted to hear that she and date won the coveted “Best Dressed Couple” award at the formal.

When Milly came to see me she had no make-up on and was dressed very casually with hair in a ponytail.  I knew the dress would be fabulous but even I was blown away when I saw this photo of her ……….

Girls, sometimes it pays to be brave and wear something different, something unexpected.        Remember you want to stand out at your formal, not blend in.  Take a risk and chose a dress that you love not one that you think other people will like.

Teen Choice Awards 2014

Not just for the younguns this event, the annual Teen Choice Awards has now become synonymous with goofy fun, a more relaxed laid back red carpet and on-stage jibes by the presenters both young and old.

I was surprised to see a wealth of looks at this year’s event, some of which I thought were spot on and others …. somewhat lacking.

The three most important things to consider when dressing for a special event is your age, the “type” of occasion you’re attending and the fit of your outfit.  If you only bear these three things in mind and nothing else when selecting your choice of attire you simply can’t go wrong.

There has been a real lack of red carpet/black tie events over the summer months so I haven’t been blogging so much as there literally hasn’t been anything to comment on, so let’s make up for lost time shall we?

Black, black and more black!  Black is back.  Even though we’re still in the month of August, Selena Gomez, Cher Lloyd and Kim Kardashian all decided against bright colours.  I simply LOVED Selena Gomez’s simple yet chic trouser suit and silver pointed shoes.  She is showing young ladies that you can cover up and dress elegantly when you’re young and still look stylish!  Her make up with the smoky eye, lack of accessories and slicked back hair were just perfect.

Teenie Bopper, Cher Lloyd also shone in classy black, although she kept things fun and younger with a shorter hemline and a hint of see through mesh.  Mesh fabric is so in style at the moment for evening wear, it’s a way of showing skin without being over revealing or vulgar.  It’s also great at disguising blemished or uneven skin tone as well.

At just 16, it’s hard to process just how mature Bella Thorne seems to be when making fashion choices for events.  This outfit is a little out there but I loved it on her.  The blue is perfect with her auburn colouring and the very structured silhouette and stiff fabric make the most of her small frame.  However, the mesh inset at the bust is in my opinion too low and inappropriate for her age.  Remember number one in my most important things to consider ….?

Keeping things fun was an amazing dress worn by Odeya Rush who stars alongside Taylor Swift in the upcoming flick, The Giver.  The coolest part of the dress were the pockets!  Ingenious. It keeps the style informal and downplays the fuller skirt and more dramatic corseted, lace top which all could look a tad OTT.  The fact that the hemline stops above her ankle again is a fresh take on evening/party wear.

I’m glad to see red carpet events are finally on the increase and look forward to blogging about hopefully some really interesting fashion choices.

Winning Dress Once Again For Belle Dress Hire!

A lovely lady contacted Belle Dress Hire last week to arrange an appointment for her daughter.  When I asked if she needed directions, I was somewhat surprised when she said, “Yes, definitely need directions, don’t know Lisburn too well as we’re from Co. Monaghan.”  I have had ladies visit from as far as Coleraine, Kilkeel, Newry ….. but a 2 hour drive from across the border showed immense dedication in the quest for an evening dress!

During the appointment, I soon realised the reason why there was such a need to travel for a full length formal gown.  The lovely Orla was to complete in the Glaslough Rose competition which is part of the annual Glaslough Fete in Co. Monaghan.

As this was Orla’s first time taking part in such an event, finding the perfect dress was extremely important.  There were four KEY things to bear in mind to ensure it was the right style  …

Number one and the most important – the FIT of the dress which I always tell my customers is the most critical thing to consider when choosing an evening dress.

Number two was MODESTY as she’s a beautiful yet young girl, I needed both herself and mum to be comfortable with the level of flesh on show.

Number three was UNIQUENESS of the dress as it was imperative that Orla stood out on stage from other competitors.

And finally number four was COMFORTABILITY so that ease of movement would not be a challenge.

After numerous dress changes, we all agreed on the very first dress that Orla tried on!  I can’t tell you how many times that happens.  This stunning dress from Paris, fitted Orla to absolute perfection.  It met her curves without clinging and the sheer tulle bottom kept the style young and modern.  The shorter hemline was just that, short yet modest and the embellished beadwork ensured that the dress would sparkle under stage lights.

I was not surprised one bit when Orla’s mum told me that she won BEST DRESSED ROSE category at the competition and they were coming back this week to choose her formal dress!

Congratulations Orla and family who I’m sure are very proud of you.

A/W 2014 Formal Season …

All you lovely, young ladies out there who are attending a school formal in September/October, I just wanted to let you know that girls from Lurgan, Portadown, Kilkeel, Belfast and Lisburn have already started coming to appointments at Belle Dress Hire and are reserving dresses for hire.

As Belle Dress Hire specialises in exclusive, high end styles, once a number of dresses have been reserved for a particular school formal then unfortunately I will not be able to take any further appointments so as to avoid only being able to offer a small selection of gowns to someone at an appointment.

Just a heads up that if you are interested in hiring a dress for your school formal, it’s never too early to select a dress and pay your deposit as it can sometimes take weeks to find matching shoes and accessorises.  Plus you want plenty of time to research and experiment with complimenting hair styles and make up.

Belle Dresses range from sizes 6 through to 18 and for a quick response use the contact us form on the website to make an appointment.

Enter a Competition in Style with Belle Dress Hire!

Congratulations to 15 year old Sorcha Ferguson who competed in this year’s Ultimate Beauty UK & Ireland competition at the weekend.  The annual event took place at Bellini’s in Newry and showcased the very best of young beauty both inside and out.

When Sorcha came to me for a competition evening dress we had to bear in mind her natural beauty and certainly her young age.  Sorcha is a tiny size 6 so again we didn’t want anything too revealing but wanted to take full advantage of her very slim figure.

Although loads of dresses suited Sorcha, we finally decided on this gorgeous, full length, raspberry coloured halter neck gown.  With a few alterations, the dress fitted perfectly.  I love this colour on brunettes and I believe she received lots of compliments on the day.

Sorcha was among the top 15 girls and for her very first beauty competition I think she did amazingly well!
