Fashion at the Irish Open

I was up in Portrush today, cheering on our local Golfing heroes. I have returned home soaked to the absolute bone! I would love to say that the fashion style at this event was fantastic but unfortunately everyone was covered up in as many waterproof layers as possible. It got me thinking though about this year’s luxe sportswear trend. Sometimes we’d rather kick back in something comfortable depending on the occasion and of course the weather! Therefore, this trend is definitely something to consider.  Whether dressing for work, an evening or a date, this trend can be incorporated into any type of outfit.  I always remember Stella McCartney’s very early designs had a luxury “sports” feel to them and now there is a complete wave of designers following suit showing on the catwalks of Prada and Christopher Shannon to Alexander Wang.  Even the ever sophisticated Victoria Beckham has introduced some sportswear looks to her Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

So embrace the 2012 Olympics and try the luxe sports trend this summer.  To keep this look affordable, dig deep into the wardrobe and dust off that oversized grey hoodie and team with a pair of baggy three quarter length trousers (perferably rolled up at the bottom), a cropped exercise top and high top trainors (a must have at the moment).  Remember neon yellow specifically works great with this trend in terms of accessories.

Send me some photos of your own inspired Luxe Sports look!

Fabric Choice

Fabric choice can make or break an outfit. You might find the most gorgeous dress BUT if it’s in a stretchy, clingy jersey fabric and you have a few “lumps and bumps” that you’d like to disguise, jersey is not the best fabric choice. I’d like to look at thicker/heavier fabrics in this post specifically such as leather or sequin which seem to both be on trend at the moment. Kylie Minogue recently wore a full length sequin dress at an event which was absolutely stunning. Kylie was able to pull this off however because she is very petite and small framed. Heavy fabric means thicker/bigger body parts so beware! The last thing any of us want to do is give the impression our thighs are bigger than they actually are! Usually fashion styles that use a leather or suede are more expensively priced so make sure the style suits and fits perfectly before parting with your money.

Oversized trend

Check out Ashley Olsen in an oversized dress from her own collection. This is not everyone’s cup of tea to be fair, however the plus point with oversized fashion means it can hide a multitude of sins! And, you don’t have to go for oversized all over, you can choose whether to rock this look on the top (if you have a large bust) or the bottom (if you haven’t done any squats recently and your bum is looking out of shape). An oversized top or coat over skinny jeans for example works really well. If going for a baggy look in the trousers or a tulip shaped skirt, keep the top very fitted and make sure to wear a belt to draw your shape in at the waist. It’s all about balance if you’re not wearing this trend from top to toe. I think this style works best in a statement colour and a lighter fabric. If Ashley’s dress had’ve been black I think I’d be posting about how I felt it reminded me of a bin liner!
I welcome the oversized trend because I feel it suits all shapes and sizes. Remember the smaller framed girls do want to “bulk up” sometimes with fashion and by the same token, heavier ladies want to disguise body parts with fashion so it’s very much a win win for me.

Dressing for your age ….

This is a hot topic and it seems that everyone has a different opinion when it comes to what does it mean to “dressing age appropriately”?

Looking firstly at the more mature lady, we’ve all heard the term “mutton dressed as lamb” and cringe to think anyone would be referring to us in this way. Between the ages of 40-60, I feel a dress or outfit can be deemed “age appropriate” if it compliments the body shape, highlights all the “best” parts of the body and does not show too much skin! Kris Jenner gets it right in this body forming dress. The black column of colour down each side gives the illusion of a smaller waistline, instantly giving Kris enviable curves in all the right places. The length is perfect and Kris has kept the shoes and accessories very simple meaning all the focus is on the dress. This oufit is also very clever because by using colour blocking, the style is fresh and very much in trend. The accent orange hue in the necklace also keeps this outfit interesting. All in all Kris has done a great job and she looks like she feels really good in this dress by her posture and expression.

Julianne Hough by the same token has dressed appropriately for her younger age in this neon yellow dress. Neon is bang on trend for summer and when you’re young like Julianne you can afford for a dress to “cling” and show off your hard earned gym curves. This look is sexy without exposing lots of skin. The lightness of the fabric highlights Julianne’s toned derriere and bust beautifully and tastefully. Just to ensure she doesn’t look “too styled”, Julianne has kept her hair quite messy in a top knot and again the accessories are fairly simple. The red lip colour which I have blogged about earlier in the week completes the look.
